Predi Designs collaborated with YVI Valve, Inc. to redesign their product catalog for the American market. By minimizing the use of culturally specific colors and outdated design elements, we created a sleek, product-focused catalog that emphasizes YVI's commitment to quality and international collaboration.
Project Goals & Purpose
YVI Valve, Inc., originally established in China, aimed to penetrate the American market to expand their global footprint. Recognizing that their existing marketing materials were tailored to their domestic audience, they sought to adapt their catalog to better resonate with American customers. This adaptation was crucial for establishing credibility and competitiveness in a new market.
Predi Designs was selected for this project due to our expertise in cross-cultural design and our ability to create marketing materials that appeal to diverse audiences. Our team conducted a thorough analysis of YVI's existing catalog, identifying elements that might not align with American design sensibilities. We then developed a strategy to transform the catalog, focusing on universal design principles and market-specific preferences.
A significant aspect of this transformation involved the deliberate avoidance of the color red, which, while auspicious in Chinese culture, is heavily associated with China and could inadvertently highlight the company's foreign origins. Instead, we opted for a corporate color palette that aligns with American aesthetics, utilizing shades of blue and gray to convey trustworthiness and professionalism.
Additionally, the original catalog featured numerous photography collages showcasing factory capabilities, a design choice that, although informative, appeared dated. We shifted the focus towards high-quality product renderings. By presenting the valves as matte white 3D models with cast shadows on brand-colored backgrounds, we emphasized the products' features and applications.
To further enhance the catalog's appeal, we incorporated a “flow” motif, using curvy, organic lines to reinforce the core function of YVI's products—flow control. These lines guide the reader’s eye through the content, creating a cohesive and engaging narrative throughout the catalog.
Challenges
One of the primary challenges was transforming a catalog deeply rooted in Chinese design aesthetics to resonate with American audiences without compromising the brand’s identity. This required a delicate balance between cultural sensitivity and market appeal.
Additionally, the original catalog's over-reliance on photography collages to showcase factory capabilities needed to be reimagined. To avoid appearing outdated, we had to develop a modern, cohesive design that would stand out in a competitive industry.
Solutions
To address these challenges, we conducted extensive research into American industrial design trends and cross-cultural marketing strategies. We developed a design strategy that minimized culturally specific elements, such as the color red, and introduced a palette suited for the American market.
We replaced outdated photography collages with large, matte white product renderings set against brand-colored backgrounds. This approach not only modernized the catalog but also placed the emphasis squarely on product functionality. The inclusion of curvy, organic flow lines further reinforced the purpose of YVI’s valves—flow control.
